In 2014, CREATE was able to help raise funding for some wonderful arts projects in Oxford - here's an update on how they did...
CREATE #7 – Lunas Dance
FUNDING RAISED THROUGH CREATE: £410
Not only getting the much needed financial help was amazing, but so was the whole experience of getting ready for it! It’s been inspirational and proved once more that wonderful things can happen when a group of committed people get their thoughts together. The pictures are of the shows we could present in May at Arts at the Old Fire Station – the CREATE money helped with rehearsal space, costume, theatre space, tech rehearsal….etc.
We aimed for a goal and it made us stronger!
Thank you, CREATE team for your time, effort and dedication. It means a lot to me and to everyone who is working so hard to make their dreams come true!
CREATE #8 – Amy Hailwood, Far Away So Close
FUNDING RAISED THROUGH CREATE: £886
Our success with the CREATE pitch kick-started an amazing run of funding success, so a massive thank you to CREATE for the opportunity. It has been really exciting to see Faraway, So Close grow from just a seed of an idea to a living, breathing piece of theatre that I hope will go on beyond these two shows. Thank you so much for the chance to bring this story to life.
CREATE #9 – Flintlock Theatre, Don Q
FUNDING RAISED THROUGH CREATE: £910
We approached Create early in 2014 in order to pitch for support for Don Q - our second ever show. Don Q is a re-imagining of Cervantes' Don Quixote and, in our version, tells the tale of Norman Vaughan, an old man who has lost himself in books, increasingly ignored in a rushing world, who embarks on one final adventure with his best friend Sam, becoming a knight errant and aiming to put rights the wrongs of this world.
The money that we won at the Create night back in July enabled us to leverage a further £15,000 of funding from Arts Council England. Combined with additional funds from separate fundraising efforts, we were able to make, perform and plan a tour for our second show Don Q.
Without Create money, the Arts Council would have looked for us to contribute funds that we simply didn't have. Create support also bolstered their confidence in us as it demonstrated the local support we could anticipate once the project was up and running and tickets were on sale. Winning funds from local "cultural stakeholders" (that's you lot) has meant that as an emerging theatre company we were enabled to make a show under reasonable working conditions - we were able to rehearse for a decent length of time, whilst being able to eat, have comfortable digs and work in safety. Being able to talk about Create support boosted confidence in us from diverse quarters and has helped us to make it to huge milestones in our development.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the City Council and to Create and to all of you who donated, thereby enabling us to make Don Q. Without your support, grassroots theatre doesn't have a future. Thanks to you, it does. It's as simple as that.
CREATE #10 – Under Construction Theatre, The Story Tailors
FUNDING RAISED THROUGH CREATE: £567
We have fundraised an extra £1000 through a Kickstarter campaign last month.
Together with the CREATE money, this will pay for costumes and props, an instant printer and for materials and a fee to Groovy Su to sew bespoke backdrops for our performance tent.
People have also donated costumes they longer need and we are open for more to do so!
We aim to have it ready by March for summer performances around the city.
